Ultrasonic flaw detector UDS2M-11

Detachable single-strand ultrasonic flaw detector UDS2M-11 is designed for detection, registration and decoding of signals from defects located along the entire length and cross-section of railroad rails, except for the sole feathers.

The flaw detector is designed for:

– for control of elements of switches;

– for continuous inspection in areas where it is difficult or unsafe to check two strands simultaneously;

– to control the rails of the kilometer stockpile;

– for pre-welding inspection of old year rails at rail-welding plants.

The flaw detector is also designed for random manual inspection of welded joints, separate sections and sections of rails with determination of location coordinates, detectability coefficient and conditional length of detected defects.

Travel speed of the flaw detector during continuous inspection, with registration of defectograms, not more than 4 km/h.

Controls are subject to:

– rails of R43, R50, R65, R75 types, the dimensions, material and composition of which comply with GOST R51685, and surface quality – GOST 18576;

– rails type UIC60, S49 with dimensions, material and composition in accordance with EN 13674-1;

– rails of connecting tracks, cross rails, cross whiskers, shackles and frame rails of switches, the dimensions, material and composition of which comply with GOST R51685 and GOST R55820.

The flaw detector is a portable mechanized system of ultrasonic inspection using Echo (EM) and mirror shadow method (MTM) with the contact method of ultrasonic vibrations input. The number of channels, realized when working with the acoustic unit in the mode of continuous control – 8.

The number of excitation and reception channels of the ultrasonic transducer provided for operation with manual piezoelectric transducers (PEP) is 2.

Signaling of defects presence – audible and color on the indicator screen. Indication of set values of conditional sensitivity of channel control (dB), defect detectability coefficient (dB), defect coordinates (mm), current track coordinate of the controlled track section (km and m) – digital on the indicator screen.

The flaw detector provides for continuous documentation (registration) of inspection results in the form of flaw diagrams of inspected sections in the B-type sweep format, with accompanying information about the amplitude and time characteristics of the registered echo-signals, the conditional sensitivity of inspection set in each of the inspection channels and the current values of the track coordinate. There is a possibility of operative viewing of registered defectograms on the flaw detector screen, as well as output of defectograms with accompanying information to a personal computer (PC) for further decoding.

Main parameters of the flaw detector

  • The operating frequency of the continuous and manual control channels is (2.5 ±0.25) MHz.
  • The echo gain adjustment range is from 0 to 70 dB.
  • The gain control discreteness is 1 dB.
  • The sensitivity margin required for setting the conditional sensitivity during the whole service life of the flaw detector should be not less than 25 dB for all resonators and PEPs.
  • Dead zone of the flaw detector as CO-3P:

a) with PEP P121-2,5-65, P121-2,5-70, P112-2,5 not more than 3 mm;

b) with PEP P121-2,5-42, P121-2,5-50, P121-2,5-55 not more than 6 mm.

  • The basic absolute error of measuring the reflector location coordinates by handheld PEPs is not more than ± (0.02 Ni(Li) + 1) mm.
  • Electrical power supply of the flaw detector is carried out from a DC source with voltage from 8.4 to 5.8 V.
  • Current consumption at rated voltage of 7.3 V is not more than 0.7 A.
  • The flaw detector is resistant to ambient air temperature from minus 40°C to plus 50°C.
  • The flaw detector is resistant to ambient relative humidity up to 98% at 35°C and lower temperatures without condensation.

Additional parameters

  • The range of determination of the relative amplitude ΔN of the echo signal is from zero to plus (70 – Kp) dB.
  • Average consumption of process fluid to ensure acoustic contact is not more than 0.5 liters per 100 m of inspected track.
  • Weight of the flaw detector in working condition without process fluid is not more than 6 kg.
  • Overall dimensions of the flaw detector are not more than 1200 mm x 200 mm x 270 mm.
  • Time of establishing the operating mode – not more than 3 min.
  • The flaw detector continuous operation time from a fully charged built-in power supply at the temperature (25 ± 15)°C is not less than 8 hours.
  • The flaw detector is resistant to sinusoidal vibrations and robust to single mechanical shocks.
  • In terms of protection against penetration of solid bodies (dust) and water the electronic unit of the flaw detector corresponds to protection degree IP54 according to GOST 14254.

Distinctive features of UDS2M-11 flaw detector

  1. Availability of automatic registration in the flaw detector memory of the defectogram of the inspected track section on all inspection channels with the possibility of further viewing of defectograms on a personal computer.
  2. Possibility of operative viewing of the recorded defectogram of the last inspected track section on the display screen of the flaw detector, including the possibility of viewing the defectogram during the inspection in real time mode.
  3. Possibility to determine both the extent and amplitude-temporal characteristics of the signals recorded on the defectogram, allowing to assess the degree of danger of the detected defect.
  4. Acoustic blocks are made by pouring technology of manufacturing, which eliminates the human factor in the assembly of blocks.
  5. The acoustic unit is equipped with an electronic unit identifier based on non-volatile memory, which allows storing and automatically reading the transducer parameters when forming the control protocol.
  6. The use of GLONASS / GPS receiver allows you to determine the location of the flaw detector on the road.
  7. The presence of wireless personal Bluetooth network in the flaw detector allows to use wireless Bluetooth head phones in the flaw detector operation, and also gives the possibility to transfer files of inspection protocols to the devices supporting Bluetooth connection.
  8. In the control program of the electronic unit of the flaw detector there are several variants of displaying color schemes allowing to improve visual perception of screen forms depending on the conditions of external illumination.
